Huaiyu's house on Soochow Hutung, near the Legation Quarter, had previously been occupied by foreigners and had been modernized with electric lights, flush toilets, and a telephone. The rooms on different sides of the courtyard had been connected by enclosed corridors so that in winter one did not have to go out into the open to pass from one side to the other. The east was used as a kind of study, connecting with the main rooms on the north, which were occupied by Huaiyu's wife and the children. Inging had her separate court on the west, slightly further back and reached from the court hack of the wife's rooms by a four-panel green door. A fountain stood in the middle of her courtyard. They had newly moved in and Huaiyu had furnished both the wife's and the concubine's bedrooms with the same amount and style of furniture. On the east of the second main court was the dining room, where the whole family dined together.
