I couldn't sleep. My room was silent; not a single noise came from the other side of the wall anymore. The house's familiar sounds had disappeared, and the pleats of the curtains remained sadly still. I looked at my watch. At three in the morning Luke took his break; I wanted to see him. With that in mind, I stepped outside and closed the door to the house, not suspecting where my steps would lead me.

I turned the corner into the alleyway. Hidden in the shadow of night, I saw my best friend sitting in his chair, in conversation with his father. I didn't want to interrupt him, so I turned around and kept walking. Not knowing where to go, I walked to the school gates. The gate was half open, so I went inside. The schoolyard was silent and empty -- at least I thought so. Walking over to the chestnut tree, I heard a voice calling me.
