Mom had announced in a letter that she'd come during the first week of March. Before her arrival, I'd reserved a table at her favorite restaurant and negotiated bitterly with my chief resident for a day off. That Wednesday morning, I was going to meet her train. As the cars emptied of their passengers, my mother wasn't among them. Suddenly Luke appeared on the platform. He had no bag and was standing motionless in front of me. From the tears in his eyes, I immediately understood that my world had just crumbled and that nothing would ever be the same again.

Luke came over to me slowly. I wished he'd never reach me, so that he couldn't pronounce the words he was about to say.
