Merthin sat on the roof of St Mark's church, at the north end of Kingsbridge. From here he could see the whole town. To the south-east, a bend in the river cradled the priory in the crook of its elbow. A quarter of the town was taken up by the priory buildings and the grounds around them -- cemetery, market place, orchard and vegetable garden -- with the cathedral rising from its surroundings like an oak in a field of nettles.
