Three weeks passed. Whenever we bumped in to each other at the hospital, Sophie and I were somewhat embarrassed, although we acted as if everything was fine. A fit of the giggles renewed our friendship. We were both in the hospital garden, enjoying a few minutes' break. Sophie was telling me about one of Luke's misadventures. Two patients had been taken to the emergency room at the same time. Luke was racing with his stretcher to get his patient to the operating room first. At the end of the hallway, he'd had to swerve suddenly to avoid the head nurse, and the patient slipped off the stretcher. Luke threw himself on the ground to break his patient's fall -- mission accomplished -- but the stretcher rolled on top of them, earning him three stitches in his forehead.
