My fear of nighttime turned into fear of solitude. I don't like sleeping alone; regardless, that's how I live, in a studio apartment under the eaves of a building not far from the medical school. Yesterday I celebrated my twentieth birthday. That pesky six-month lead in school meant I had to celebrate it before I'd had time to make friends, but in any case, our med-school schedule doesn't leave us any time for parties.

Two years ago, I left my childhood behind under a chestnut tree in a schoolyard, in that small town where I grew up.
